Resettlement Program
Resettling LGBTI Refugees in the San Francisco Bay Area
ORAM is currently assisting in resettling vulnerable lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) refugees to the San Francisco Bay Area. As a coordinating agency, ORAM is resettling refugees in partnership with Bay Area resettlement agencies, and our efforts are mostly facilitated by volunteers.
Refugees are identified by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and are accepted by the U.S. Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Refugees who are resettled to the U.S. receive a very modest stipend to cover their preliminary accommodation and living expenses. After eight months, all support ceases.
LGBTI refugees have significant challenges upon arrival in the U.S., including needs for housing and community. We are looking for volunteers in the San Francisco Bay Area who can assist us in providing newly arrived refugees with housing and creating a network of support.
